Beramendi Reserva Merlot 2001 Winery: Beramendi (San Martín de Unx, D. O. Navarre)
Bodegas Beramendi are located in San Martín de Unx, on the lower part of the slopes of the western entrance into this town in central Navarre. It is a land that has “always” been dedicated to vine growing and wine production, favored by its climatological conditions and its great diversity. This winery was founded in 1990 by the married couple Janices-Marco, a family with a great wine tradition, and began operations with a production capacity of 400,000 liters. The first vintage of young wines came out on the market this year, with the support of the Moriones family. It includes both red and rosé wines from their own grapes, and sales are destined for the local market. Their wines come from around 125 Ha.: 70% are from there own land in Larraga, Olite and San Martín de Unx, and 30% come from other area vine growers. One of its characteristics is that it is a winery run by women. María Luisa and her mother are the owners and Charo Moriones is the oenologist. This factor is starting to be noticeable in the way they understand the winery and in their vision of the wines they produce. The Tinto Reserva Merlot 2001 was selected for its excellent vintage. It is created from Merlot variety grapes that are chosen from among the best vineyards and aged in French oak barrels for 18 months. It is an exclusive red wine with a great future, with an intense cherry-red color with a brick edge. It gives off black fruit compote aromas as well as vanilla, melted together with fine leather. In the mouth, it leaves the impression of a strong, but delicious, velvety wine, with an optimal structure and tannins, with great persistence. The combination makes for a very resolute wine with personality.
