Berquera Reserva 2001 Winery: Otazu (Echauri, D. O. Navarre)

Framed by the Sierra del Perdón and the Sierra de Echauri, with the Arga river forming the boundary line, the Otazu winery is the northeastern most one found in Navarre (and in Spain) producing red wine. The vineyards are influenced by both Mediterranean and Atlantic climates, and are their grapes are the only ones used to produce their wines. From the beginning, the objective of this winery has been to produce high-end wines. The 4 varieties that this winery uses are Tempranillo, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon for red wines, and Chardonnay for white wines. They also use Allier French oak exclusively for vintage. This all results in a range of wines that have a good presence of fruit, and that are fresh, elegant, and with structure. One of the emblematic wines from Otazu is the Berquera Reserva 2001, elaborated with a coupage of the best grapes from their own estate, consisting of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 10% Tempranillo. It has been aged for 18 months in barrel and 18 months in bottle. It has an intense cherry-red color with a large robe, with a slight blood-colored edge. Its nose is marked by Cabernet-Sauvignon, with certain rural tones at its onslaught, accompanied by dry earth, cedar, smoky oak, dried beef and dried flower aromas (immortelles). In the glass, it opens up and hints of freeze-dried strawberries emerge, along with minerals, dates (very subtle) and very concentrated black fruit. It is elegant in the mouth, with a good weight of fruit, and agile when swallowed. Refined and sensual. Good persistence, and with a retronasal sensation of cherries in liquor.
